In order to breathe properly, you need to breathe deeply into your abdomen, not just your chest. Breathing exercises should be deep, slow, rhythmic, and in through the nose, not through the mouth. The most important part of deep breathing is to regulate your breaths.
If you have not be breathing this deliberately in the past, it may feel like an effort. Stay with it as your body will quickly relearn how to breath properly.
